The mitochondria transfer field has gained a tremendous amount of momentum in recent years and captured the imaginations of many scientists. The rapid pace of research has led to the use of many different terms to describe similar processes, creating confusion among researchers. This review article was led by Dr. Jonathan R. Brestoff, MD, PhD, MPH at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine and is the product of 32 leading investigators from around the world to establish recommendations and guidance on terminology to describe mitochondria transfer and therapeutic administration of mitochondria. The review was constructed in two working groups that were organized by time zones, where nomenclature frameworks were proposed and disagreements were debated. The article’s outline was generated through consensus and used to draft this pre-print version of the article.
