About
The UCL Research Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment (GEE) is part of the Division of Biosciences and the Faculty of Life Sciences. GEE traces its origins to the Department of Comparative Anatomy founded in 1826 and incorporates previous Departments of Biology, Botany, Microbiology, Zoology and the Galton Laboratory, the first Department of Genetics in the UK. GEE continues to be world-leading in the study of Evolutionary Biology, Human Genetics, Healthy Ageing and Biodiversity research, with over 40 research groups and some 200 Post-Docs, PhD Students and support staff.
Particularly, Lane’s research is on the way that energy flow has shaped evolution over 4 billion years, using a mixture of theoretical and experimental work to address the origin of life, the evolution of complex cells and downright peculiar behaviour such as sex.

Nick Lane, PhD
Professor of Evolutionary Biochemistry Genetics, Evolution & Environment, Division of BiosciencesBio
Nick Lane is Professor of Evolutionary Biochemistry at UCL. He was a founding member of the UCL Consortium for Mitochondrial Research and is Co-Director of the UCL Centre for Life’s Origins and Evolution. His research is about how energy flow has shaped evolution from the origin of life to the emergence of complex traits such as sex, death and consciousness. Lane has written five books on energy and evolution, and has received many awards for his work, including the 2015 Biochemical Society Award and the 2016 Royal Society Faraday Prize.
