Beyond The Disease, September 2, 2026
In “Beyond the Disease” MitoWorld partners with the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation to highlight advances in mitochondrial science and the people responsible for them. www.MitoWorld.org is devoted to better public and medical understanding of underlying mitochondrial science in an effort to raise awareness of the field in order to attract greater funding for the pursuit of mitochondrial disease and dysfunction.
Gravity Influences Mitochondrial Translation
Gravity and other forces are all around us, but do they affect gene expression? A multi-institute research team, led by Shintaro Iwasaki of RIKEN/the University of Tokyo, explored how mitochondrial translation is influenced by gravitational and mechanical forces. The study was recently published in Nature Communications.
Spaceflight, Mitochondria, and the Immune System
Extended spaceflight presents many challenges to the human body, including the immune system. Recently, a team, led by Daniel Winer, Alexander Chouker, Christopher Mason and Brian Crucian, described those challenges and strategies for maintaining immune health in future astronauts. The review was published in Nature Reviews Immunology.
